Lake Ohau - South Island, New Zealand
Lake Ohau, 25 kms west of Twizel is famous for beech forests, crystal clear rivers and an excellent skifield. Ohau in Maori means "the place of the wind."The lake is an example of kettle lakes formed by melting glacial ice and terraced banks.
Lake Ohau Activities
Kayaking and fishing are popular activities on the lake. The Dobson and Hopkins Rivers flow into the north end of the lake and these are favourite spots for anglers and kayakers.
To the northwest of the lake are the beech rich Ohau Forests interspersed with numerous tracks. The DOC at the Twizel Visitor Centre has more information on the Ohau Conservation area and the walks range from a half hour to 4 hours. It is a pretty area and tramping is a real pleasure in such scenic surroundings.
The Lake is surrounded by a raft of holiday homes. There is a camping site and the beautiful Lake Ohau Lodge. There are huts on tramp routes which offer just a bunk and nothing else.
A major highlight is the Lake Ohau Skifield. It is at an elevation of 1033 metres with lovely powder snow and uncrowded slopes and is a great spot for intermediate skiiers and snowboarders. Ski gear can be hired in the skifield.
Lake Ohau Accommodation
Lake Ohau Lodge is a traditional old ski lodge with a cafe and a sun deck surrounded by stunning views. There is a bus from Lake Ohau Lodge to the skifield. You can also hire private transport by calling the ski field information line. There are a variety of skiing courses available along with gear rental.
