Alexandra - South Island, New Zealand
Alexandra is a small town 10 kilometres southeast of Clyde which sprang up during the 1862 gold rush when huge gold dredges worked the Clutha River. Known as the fruit growing heartland of Central Otago, Alexandra is visited for its wine making, orchids and mountain bike trails.
With its long hours of hot sun, the region's winemaking is redefining the area as many visitors come and visit the vineyards. The wineries are all highlighted on the free Central Otago Wine Map, available from visitor centres.
Alexandra Activities
Alexandra is a great base for mountain biking with treeless hills and plenty of trails, including some historic gold miners trails. There is a Mountain biking Trail map available from the visitors centre, or Altitude Adventures specialise in bike rentals and guided single track tours from a local half day trip to a four day grand tour of the area. There is also a 4WD safari up the Dunstan Mountains or surrounding areas.
In winter, there is New Zealand's only Olympic-sized outdoor skating rink called Iceline.
There are plenty of buses coming though Alexandra from Wanaka, Queenstown and Dunedin.
Alexandra Accommodation
There is plenty of low cost accommodation including backpackers, motels and a campground. There is a handful of cafes and restaurants with attached bars, but the selection is limited.
