Cromwell and Clyde - South Island, New Zealand

East of Arrowtown, Cromwell is a flat little town located on the shores of Lake Dunstan. Cromwell's history stretches back to the gold rush days of the 1800s but the town underwent a major transformation in the 1980s when parts of it were flooded (on purpose) during the construction of the Clyde Dam power station and much of its historic core is now underwater.

The best of the town's historic buildings were relocated and rebuilt to create 'Old Cromwell Town' - a feature attraction for visitors. The town itself does not hold much visitor interest, but the surrounding region beckons tourists with its cluster of wineries, fruit orchids and outdoor activities.

Cromwell and Clyde Activities

Just 9 kilometres southwest of Cromwell is Bannockburn, a valley with a cluster of vineyards open for tastings and sales of highly praised pinot noir and pinot gris wines. These can be explored on foot, "self drive" or on an organised tour. Most wineries have adjoining fine restaurants. Bannockburn is fast becoming recognised as a fine wine area and should not be missed by wine lovers.

Cromwell is strategically located for easy day trips to Queenstown, Alexandra, Arrowtown, Wanaka and Roxburgh.

Clyde is located beside the emerald green Clutha River, just south of the Clyde Dam and is surrounded by rounded hills of schist punctuated with large craggy rocks.

It is a cute historical town with 19th century architecture, excellent dining with a cluster of great cafes and restaurants, plus some interesting walks.

There are three museums in Clyde, making it easy to get a picture of its history, rich in gold mining. Clyde is at the head of a well known cycling route called the Otago Central Rail Trail, so there are plenty of mountain bikes for hire. A ride to the Clyde Lookout offers spectacular views of the town and beyond.
