Milford Sound - South Island, New Zealand
Described by Rudyard Kipling as the 'eighth wonder of the world', Milford Sound was carved by glaciers during the Ice Ages. At its deepest point, it plunges to a depth of 265 metres.
Wet or fine, Milford Sound is breathtaking. The fiord's sides rise up from tremendously deep and dark waters, Mitre Peak rises upwards 1,692m (5550ft) straight from the deep fiord and waterfalls cascade down sheer cliffs.
Milford Sound Activities
One of New Zealand biggest tourist attractions, Milford Sound was voted by Trip Advisor as the Number 1 Destination to visit in the world. Many visitors come to take in the beauty by walking the Milford Track which finishes with a ferry trip from Sandfly Point to the Milford Sound wharf, but there are many other ways to experience this great wonder.
Flight seeing and sea kayaking are two other ways to immerse yourself in the grandeur of huge peaks, waterfalls and sheer rock faces.
In addition to day cruises in the Milford Sound, there are overnight cruises which take visitors out of the Sound out into the open Tasman Sea, with stops at other sounds, such as Dusky Sound. These cruises can combine fishing and diving.
Milford Sound, the settlement, exists solely to look after travellers who come to see Milford Sound the fiord. Facilities and services are limited - you will find a cafeand a tavern. Most activity is centred around the wharf, because cruises on Milford Sound are hugely popular (food is available on board).
There is an underwater observatory, you can see up close the unusual scenery than exists below the water such as black coral, 11-legged sea stars and delicate anemones, as well as intriguing snakestars.
Milford Sound Accommodation
Accommodation in the Milford settlement is very limited. The Milford Sound Lodge caters only to those doing the guided walk or on a boat in an overnight cruise. And there is a backpackers less than one kilometre up the road. All other accommodation for Milford Sound is based in Te Anau.
You can reach Milford Sound by walking, flight, bus or car. There are daily bus services from Queenstown and Te Anau. Trampers buses operate from Te Anau and Queenstown too. All these buses pass the start/end of the Routeburn, Greenstone and Caples Tracks.
