Kaikoura - South Island, New Zealand
Located 183 kilometres north of Christchurch on SH1, Kaikoura is a mecca for wildlife enthusiasts. The name Kaikoura means "meal of crayfish" and reflects what an influence the sea has on this area.
It is rich in marine life due to the presence of very deep water and a mixing of the warm and cold ocean currents there, which forces nutrients from the ocean floor to the surface.
Kaikoura was once a sleepy fishing town, noted only for its crayfish. Then, in 1987, Nature Watch Charters began whale watching trips and the region's popularity and fame has increased dramatically.
Kaikoura Activities
Thousands of international visitors make the trip to see the unique wildlife of Sperm Whales, Orca Whales, Hector Dolphins (the smallest and rarest), New Zealand fur seals and the bottlenose dolphin. Seabirds include petrels, albatross and shearwaters.
Tours are big business in Kaikoura and there are some thrilling opportunities to see these creatures up close. The habits of whales and seals and the acrobatic dolphins can be seen from the shore, from the air and both on and in the water. Sperm whales are most likely to be seen from October to August and orcas from December to March. Most other fauna is seen year round.
