Picton - South Island, New Zealand
Picton is a pretty portside town set in the deep, calm waters of the Queen Charlotte Sound. Picton is referred to as the "gateway to the South Island" as the Cook Strait Ferry, connecting the North Island to the South Island, docks here.
It is also the best base from which to explore the Marlborough Sounds, particularly the Queen Charlotte Track.
Picton is a small town, but does buzz somewhat with the droves of visitors that come through it via the ferry or rail. Ferries, water taxis and pleasure boats are the main theme in this pretty town.
