Doubtless Bay - North Island, New Zealand
North of the Bay of Islands, Doubtless Bay is sheltered by the Karikari Peninsula. It is a placid spot with glorious languid beaches and the outstandingly beautiful Whangaroa Harbour, a sweet spot for sailing and kayaking.
Doubtless Bay was first discovered by Kupe who set foot in New Zealand in Taipa, and later by Captain Cook who sailed past it in 1769. Doubtless Bay offers fantastic opportunities for boating and is a favourite with local vacationers. The magnificent beaches of Doubtless Bay around the Karikari Peninsula are the scene of hectic activity in January.
Doubtless Bay Activities
Houhora Heads is a popular camping ground and enjoys prime location on the water's edge beneath Mt Camel. The Houhora Big Game and Sports Fishing Club is the force behind the annual Houhora One Base Game Fishing Tournament which attracts many competitors, and there are usually many visiting boats moored in the harbour.
The Pukenui Wharf abounds in kingfish. Rarawa Beach located at the southern end of Great Exhibition Bay is a good surf spot. The adjacent Henderson Bay is a shell-collector's paradise. Surfcasting is a form of fishing from the shore by casting a line into the surf. Henderson Bay is home to many surfcasters who enjoy a peaceful snooze while they fish.
