Invercargill - South Island, New Zealand
New Zealand's southern most city, Invercargill is the commercial centre of Southland. It is not a tourist trap as such but many travellers end up there en route to Stewart Island or the Catlins.
Invercargill Activities
The town does have some gems that are worth exploring - namely architecture, museums, parks and galleries, where the city's strong Scottish ancestry is evident.
The city's chief attraction is the large Southern Museum and Art Gallery, housed in a pyramid-shaped building near the entrance to Queens Park. The exhibits focus mainly on local human and natural history.
Anderson Park Art Gallery is another gallery well worth the visit containing diverse works from a huge array of NZ artists. Outside there are 24 hectares of landscaped gardens.
Invercargill has plenty of cafes and restaurants. Look out for the local seafood specialities of Blue Cod fish and Bluff oysters. There are several lively bars, dance clubs and nightclubs.
Getting around Invercargill is easy, there are airport shuttles, taxis and city buses. Invercargill has a domestic airport with daily flights to Christchurch with connections to most other major centres. There are also flights to Stewart Island.
