Cambridge - North Island, New Zealand
Cambridge is a very pretty town just 24 kilometres southeast of Hamilton on SH1 with a very English look and feel to it. It was founded in 1864 and initially served as a militia settlement because of its proximity to the Waikato River.
It is now a well-established agricultural town and famed for its superb thoroughbred farms producing some of New Zealand's best racehorses.
Cambridge Activities
Cambridge reflects its pastoral background in the prominent village green. The St Andrews Anglican Church is an elegant structure that harks back to the strong Victorian influence. Opposite the church lies the Te Koutu Park with a pretty setting in the form of a lake surrounded by chestnut and oak trees.
There is a Cambridge Equine Stars Walk of Fame with mosaics of Cambridge bred star studs embedded on the pavements. The Cambridge Thoroughbred Lodge, 6 kilometres southeast of the town is where you can see real thoroughbreds being trained.
There is a visitor centre at the corner of Queen and Victoria streets. The buses on the Auckland Wellington route stop near the Town Hall. There are local shuttles from Hamilton on weekdays stopping by St Andrews Church. There is a good library on Wilson St.
