Featherston - North Island, New Zealand
Featherston is the last Wairarapa town before crossing the Rimutaka Range and heading for Wellington. It is located 13 kms south of Greytown.
Featherston Activities
The Fell Locomotive Museum on Lyon Street is a must see destination. This houses the last surviving steam locomotive in New Zealand to climb the 265 metre slope of the Rimutaka Range into the Hutt Valley.
These locos chugged around for 77 years until the new tunnel was bored in 1955. The Heritage Museum next door also has a good collection of artifacts relating to the history of the town.
Featherston has good walking tracks in the Rimutaka Rail Trail which starts 10 kms south of the town and climbs through the 576 metre summit tunnel before making a descent at Kaitoke.
There are three nice campsites along the way. The return tramp normally takes between 1 and 2 hours. There is limited accommodation in Featherston.
Featherston Accommodation
The standout is a beautiful homestead B&B on Underhill Road. There is a nice cafe on Fitzherbert St offering good quality home grown food.
