WANAKA - South Island, New Zealand
Wanaka is situated just over 100 kilometres northeast of Queenstown and is the gateway to Mt Aspiring National Park and 3 major skifields.
The dramatic crystal clear blue lakes and rugged snow capped mountain ranges of the Wanaka region enclose you in a hidden paradise and form a spectacular backdrop to a vast array of outdoor activities.
If you enter this area from the north via Haast Pass, you will come face to face with Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea forged by centuries of glacial activity. If you arrive from the south via Cardrona, you will encounter the mountain vistas and stunning views.
North of Lake Wanaka is the crown jewel of the Wanaka region, Mt Aspiring National Park. It is the nation's third largest park and is renowned for its dramatic and ever changing landscapes.
Wanaka township is a lake resort and a year-round great base to explore the surrounding region. While this activity-filled town is becoming more and more popular, it still remains a quieter neighbour to the hyped up Queenstown, managing to retain its relaxed, small town feel.
Hawea Village, set on the shores of Lake Hawea, is 15 kilometres northeast of Wanaka and is a smaller town than Wanaka. West of Wanaka are three winter skifields - Cardrona, Treble Cone and Waiorau Snow Park.
Wanaka Transportation
Wanaka has an airport offering direct flights from Christchurch International Airport, but most visitors arrive at Wanaka from Queenstown Airport, just 90 minutes from Wanaka, which offers domestic flights and an international service from Australia.
If driving, Wanaka is 6 hours and 30 minutes from Christchurch, and 1 hour 30 minutes from Queenstown. Several coach companies provide regular services.
Wanaka Town
Sitting on the shores of the lake, Wanaka is a quiet, peaceful place which is sometimes referred to as a mini Queenstown, although the two could not be more different. It is definitely an adventure destination but also has the charm and pace to be an excellent place to relax for a couple of days.
