Waikanae - North Island, New Zealand
Waikanae is located south of Kapiti Coast, 14 kms south of Otaki. It has a broad dune-backed beach along Te Moana Rd 4 kms away from the town.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) office is on Parata St. This is a good place for hikers to get information about the Tararuas.
A good place to visit is the Nga Manu Nature Reserve on Ngarara Rd, a man made bird sanctuary with good walking trails and picnic spots. It has a variety of habitats ranging from ponds and scrubland to swamp and coastal forests.
There is a huge variety of birds attracted to this varied vegetation. There is a nocturnal house with variety of birds and eels. Feeding takes place twice a day.
Another highlight of Waikanae is the Southward Car Museum, a special showroom of 250 vehicles, 3 kms south of Waikanae. It contains the largest collection of cars, fire engines and motorbikes in Australasia. Models from the 1960s, 70s and 80s are arranged in precise order and most of them are in mint condition.
